Tiny Mediterranean health powerhouse
I just came back from a short trip and yesterday, prior to
boarding my plane I bought something to eat, a panini, that
had this tasty little food common in the Mediterranean diet
and, which has been found to have a quite interesting health
benefit.
As I ate my panini with gusto, I thought you might enjoy
learning about it so here is the story.
This food goes well with many things: salmon, chicken,
omelettes, salads, etc. It’s salty, green, round and small.
It’s capers.
Well, it’s been discovered, recently, that the extract of capers
can help prevent the formation of some by-products that
result during the digestion of meats.
These by-products have been associated with an increased
risk of heart disease and cancer.
Capers also are a wonderful source of antioxidants, and this
fact has taken by surprise the researchers.
On the other hand, they are a good source of many important
nutrients such as vitamin A, E, C, K, niacin, calcium, iron,
magnesium, folate, copper, riboflavin and manganese.
It’s incredible to see how something so small can have all
those nutrients, ah. Well, these vitamins and minerals together
help support the good health of many organs and systems.
For example, they assist the nervous system function, and
promote healthy eyes and healthy skin.
They aid the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and fats,
combat stress and protect your body from free radicals.
They help you to fight anxiety, relax your muscles and
increase your energy levels.
These tiny green flower buds, often overlooked in this part
of the globe can provide your body with all those remarkable
benefits.
The only thing that is kind of a minus, is that they are
high in sodium. So, if you are adding capers to your dish
remember this and don’t put too much salt. Capers will add
that salty touch you need.
If you like to eat read and fatty meats once in a while you
may want to accompany them with capers. They not only
will enhance their flavor but will make them better for you.
If you don’t, there are many other foods you can add capers
to and reap their incredible health benefits.
Wishing you good health and peace in your heart,
Monica
